The migration of Mennonites from Europe to Canada after World War II created a rapid increase in membership at the Mennonite churches in North Kildonan. In the 1950s the influx of people from the farms and also new immigrants from Germany, Russia and Paraguay created a real space problem for the Mennonite Community in North Kildonan. A variety of circumstances in the North Kildonan Mennonite Community provided the need for the formation of a new congregation in January 1964. While the newly formed congregation was still meeting at the Springfield School, a group of people transferred in from the Sargent Avenue MC. On March 14, 1965 the dedication service for our new building took place.
From the beginning the SHMC had a strong lay leadership component. The Springfield Heights MC (SHMC) is led by two boards: the Church Council (with administrative responsibilities), and the Ministerial Council (overseeing the spiritual aspects of Church life). The SHMC places strong emphasis on Christian Education through the work of our children’s, youth and adult programs.
The SHMC has several women’s auxiliary groups, who serve at weddings, funerals, and other church functions, as well as being involved with raising funds for various mission projects.
In the early 90s the church built an indoor link to the KingsfordHaus Seniors’ residence next door, to facilitate access to the church by the elderly residents.
Three congregations have grown out of the Springfield Heights Mennonite Church: Douglas MC, Jubilee MC, and River East Mennonite Church.
